Chennai, September 17 : The Jammu & Kashmir media delegation visited Chennai Port, gaining first-hand insight into its maritime operations, modern infrastructure, digital systems and ambitious future development plans.
The delegation was warmly welcomed by Chennai Port Authority officials with flowers and refreshments and was later honoured with traditional shawls and commemorative gifts. The journalists interacted with K. Ravi Kumar, Chief Engineer & Deputy Chairperson (I/c), Chennai Port Authority, who briefed them on the port’s development, operations and upcoming projects.
Operating as a 24×7, all-weather maritime gateway, Chennai Port has three major docks with 27 berths and a stated capacity of around 136 million tonnes. It handles containers, automobiles, liquid and dry bulk cargo, while its two major container terminals have a combined capacity of around 3.1 million TEUs.
The delegation was also briefed on the port’s digital transformation, including the Vessel Traffic Management System, digital gates, real-time cargo scanning and 24×7 single-window services.
Among the major upcoming projects is the proposed ₹17,000-crore Outer Harbour Project, involving reclamation of around 90 hectares and more than 2 km of new quay length, with the proposed capacity to handle vessels of up to 24,000 TEUs. A 21-km elevated corridor connecting Chennai Port with Maduravoyal and a Multimodal Logistics Park are also aimed at strengthening cargo movement and connectivity.
Newly upgraded Cruise Terminal
The delegation also visited the newly upgraded Cruise Terminal, where officials briefed the journalists about its modern passenger facilities, cruise ship operations and the infrastructure developed to cater to cruise passengers.
The terminal has recently undergone modernisation at a cost of around ₹22 crore, with its passenger-handling capacity increased from 400 to 800 passengers at a time. Officials explained the facilities and arrangements made for the arrival and departure of cruise ships and passengers.
A Memorable Voyage Through the Harbour
Following the briefings, the delegation toured the port and boarded a commercial vessel for a memorable ride through the harbour, witnessing the docks, ships, terminals and maritime infrastructure from the water.
The visit offered the J&K media delegation a close look at Chennai Port’s evolution, from its historic maritime legacy to its modern digital operations and ambitious plans for future expansion.
The visit was part of the PIB Srinagar-organised media tour, providing journalists from Jammu & Kashmir an opportunity to witness major industrial, technological and infrastructure developments across the country.
