Zojila, June 9: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Tuesday hailed the breakthrough of the strategically important Zojila Tunnel as a landmark achievement, saying the project would usher in a new era of connectivity, accelerate economic development and further strengthen the country’s security architecture.
Addressing the gathering during the breakthrough ceremony, the Lieutenant Governor congratulated the people of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh and expressed gratitude to Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, NHIDCL and all agencies associated with the project for their contribution in achieving the historic milestone.
Sinha said the Zojila Tunnel would ensure seamless all-weather connectivity between Kashmir and Ladakh, ending decades of hardships faced by people due to the seasonal closure of the Zojila Pass.
He observed that the project would provide a major boost to tourism, trade and economic activities in the region, besides facilitating easier movement of people and goods throughout the year.
The Lieutenant Governor also emphasized the strategic importance of the tunnel, saying the project would strengthen national security and improve logistical support in border areas.
Describing the breakthrough as a proud moment for the country, Sinha said the engineering marvel would stand as a symbol of progress and development and fulfil the aspirations of the people of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.
The 13.15-km-long Zojila Tunnel, one of the most challenging infrastructure projects in the Himalayan region, is expected to provide year-round connectivity between Srinagar and Leh and significantly reduce disruptions caused by heavy snowfall and adverse weather conditions.
