Srinagar, May 13: Senior BJP leader Altaf Thakur on Wednesday welcomed the cancellation of the NEET examination, saying the move reflects the government’s commitment towards transparency, fairness and protection of students’ interests.
In a detailed statement, Thakur said that lakhs of students across the country prepare for competitive examinations with immense dedication, sacrifice and hope, and any compromise with the sanctity of such examinations shakes the confidence of the youth.
He said the decision to cancel the examination was necessary in view of the serious allegations and reported irregularities that had surfaced. “The future of students cannot be allowed to suffer because of loopholes, manipulation or organised malpractice. The government has taken a responsible and courageous step by prioritising fairness over convenience,” he said.
Thakur said students from poor and middle-class families spend years preparing for NEET, often under immense financial and emotional pressure, and therefore the examination system must remain completely transparent and credible.
He called for a thorough, impartial and time-bound investigation into the alleged paper leak and other irregularities, saying those involved — whether individuals, officials, middlemen or organised networks — must be identified and dealt with strictly under law.
“Those playing with the future of students are committing a crime against society. Such elements deserve no leniency. A strong message must go out that corruption and malpractice in the education sector will not be tolerated,” Thakur said.
He also urged authorities to strengthen the examination mechanism through advanced technological safeguards, stricter monitoring systems and accountability measures to prevent such incidents in future.
Thakur appealed to students not to lose hope, saying the government is duty-bound to ensure justice and restore trust in the examination process. “Our youth deserve a system based on merit, honesty and equal opportunity. Every sincere student must feel confident that hard work alone will determine success,” he added.
He further said that the entire country stands with students who were distressed due to uncertainty surrounding the examination and expressed hope that the matter would be resolved in a transparent and student-friendly manner at the earliest.
