New Delhi: Former Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik died on Tuesday at the age of 79 after a prolonged illness.
He died at approximately 1 pm today at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital in New Delhi, where he was receiving medical treatment.
Malik served as the last Governor of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir from August 2018 to October 2019. It was during his tenure that Article 370 was abrogated, and the special status of the state was revoked on 5 August 2019. Today marks the sixth anniversary of the decision.
He was later appointed Governor of Goa and subsequently served as the Governor of Meghalaya until October 2022.
Malik’s political career began as a socialist face in the 1970s. He became a member of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly in 1974, representing Baghpat on a Bharatiya Kranti Dal ticket.
He later served as the General Secretary of the Lok Dal and went on to become an MP from Uttar Pradesh in the Rajya Sabha from 1980 to 1989.
Malik’s career saw him move through different political affiliations, including the Charan Singh’s Bhartiya Kranti Dal, Congress and VP Singh-led Janata Dal,before eventually joining the BJP in 2004.
