Chennai, September 15: The Srinagar media delegation visiting the IIT Madras Research Park on Tuesday was introduced to a range of emerging healthcare technologies being developed to address medical challenges and make healthcare services more accessible.
As part of its visit to the Research Park, the delegation visited the Healthcare Technology Innovation Centre (HTIC), where journalists were briefed about the application of Artificial Intelligence, engineering and advanced technology in healthcare.
Among the visiting journalists was Binyamin Shora of Daily Roshni, who was part of the 13-member media delegation visiting Chennai under a media tour organised by the Press Information Bureau (PIB), Srinagar.
During the interaction, the delegation was briefed about technology-enabled solutions in areas including blood testing and diagnostics, eye surgery and medical mobility, demonstrating how innovations developed through collaboration between engineering and medical sciences can address practical healthcare requirements.
The journalists also witnessed healthcare devices and technologies designed to support medical testing and diagnosis. The focus was on developing solutions that can help make healthcare delivery more efficient, accessible and suitable for diverse settings.
AI and healthcare technology
The interaction highlighted the growing role of Artificial Intelligence and digital technologies in healthcare, particularly in supporting diagnostic processes and developing technology-based medical solutions.
The delegation was briefed on how engineering expertise can be combined with medical knowledge to develop technologies that address challenges faced by patients, doctors and healthcare systems.
The Healthcare Technology Innovation Centre (HTIC) is a joint initiative of IIT Madras and the Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India. It brings together technologists, engineers, doctors, healthcare professionals, industry and government agencies for the development of healthcare technologies.
Its areas of work include diagnostics, imaging, robotics and other healthcare applications.
Research Park: From research to real-world solutions
The HTIC visit formed part of the delegation’s broader tour of the IIT Madras Research Park, where journalists were exposed to an ecosystem connecting academic research with industry, startups and commercial applications.
The Research Park also showcased IIT Madras’s work in several other emerging areas, including semiconductor technology, advanced materials, nano-functional materials, solar energy, quantum technologies and lab-grown diamonds.
The healthcare technology showcase added another important dimension to the Research Park visit, demonstrating how research and innovation can be directed towards real-world societal needs, particularly in the healthcare sector.
For the Srinagar media delegation, the visit offered a first-hand understanding of how institutions such as IIT Madras are bringing together technology, medicine, entrepreneurship and industry collaboration to develop solutions aimed 
at improving people’s lives.
